on a whim

at the end of april, i decided to run the salt lake half marathon with my good gal pal maren. she called me up a couple weeks before the race and casually mentioned i should run it with her. i've wanted to run the salt lake half for probably like 5 years, but it always turned out to be bad timing every year. well, since i'm married to a ghost (i mean med student), i decided, what the heck. i had been in a serious running slump, so i figured this would be a good thing to get me going again. as it turned out i was crazy busy in the days leading up to the race and was able to put in one 4-miler and one 6-miler the week before. when chris asked me when he should show up to the finish line i told him i would be happy finishing under 2 1/2 hours, but i would probably not finish that fast. well race day came, maren and a couple of her sister-in-laws and i met up at the start line and headed off for what i feared would be a long and super treacherous morning. aside from the water stations being a little lackluster on supplies {three water stations we passed were OUT of water. how does that happen?} the weather was beautiful, the company was awesome and i was feeling great. we kept a pretty steady pace that was going to put us at the finish just over 2 hours. i was stoked. by mile 10 i was ready to be done until we came upon some photographers. i was jumping and flapping my arms and acting like a complete imbecile, but it gave me a little oomph to keep going. between mile 11 & 12, i decided that i needed to pick up the pace a bit or i was going to have to stop and die on the side of the road. i told maren, who'd been nice enough to stick with me the entire time, that i was gonna have to plug into my ipod and hit the last little bit hard. there was a hill coming up and i could feel the mental game beginning, if i could nip it in the bud before it got the better of me, i would end up on top. i took off and ended up dropping a minute in that last mile. my time wasn't anything to scream and jump about (2:10) but i was proud considering i'd done it on a whim.

Oh, but congratulations! That's pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure I would die if I tried to do something like that on a whim.

dang girl! i don't know if i know anyone who can just run a half marathon with no training like that. i always tell quinn how i wish i could run forever like stacey. hey, is there any chance you guys will be in boise the first week of august? that is the only week quinn has off all summer so we are going home and blessing owen (even though he will be 6 months old and probably crawling). if so we would love to have you guys come to the blessing or just hang out and catch up. we miss you guys like crazy!
