my boyfriend chris was in mexico for a month and while there he made a very worthwhile purchase. he bought, for some trivial amount of pesos i'm sure, a blue and cream colored hammock. but that wasn't evident to me at first. when i first saw the tangled blue/cream mess of string, i asked, now what in the heck is that thing? it's a hammock you dork. well how on earth was i supposed to know that it just looks like a heap of string to me. and that's pretty much how it has sat for the past three weeks that he's been home--a pile of blue/cream string in his closet. but last night we decided to try it out. chris lives in an apartment complex that wants its residents to feel that they live in a park, which is really quite a novel idea compared with the somewhat forlorn concrete complexes that inhabit most of provo. so there are lots of grown trees just around everywhere outside his door--perfect for tying a hammock to. once we found what we thought to be the perfect spot for tying a hammock, a little grove of four or five trees, i ask chris--so how're we gonna tie it up we have no rope. just then to my surprise i noticed some jute string wrapped several times around two separate trees...AHA! the remains of a hammock hanging. i quickly alerted chris of my discovery and we proceeded to untie the knots of the string aroun the trees. once we had fitted the hammock to the tree with the string, chris asked me to jump in for a test run--just to make sure that the string would hold both of our weight. i gingerly climbed into the string thing and before i even put my full weight into it i came crashing to the ground (well it's not like it was that far, i was only off the ground 14-16 inches, but it still hurt and i was in a skirt). two more times i jumped in the hammock and two more times came crashing to the ground. my feathers thoroughly ruffled, i told chris once the string was fitted in a fourth contraption that he could try it out. he willingly agreed and climbed in only he came crashing farther and harder down than the three previous times. i bent down to kiss him as he laid there on the ground looking a little humiliated...it's not so fun is it. after about thirty minutes of resultless hammock hanging we felt dejected and defeated and decided to go back inside to watch the office with becca and brandon. better luck tomorrow
